I watched the movie tonight of Audie Murphy titled, "To Hell and Back". It was such a touching story about Audie's young life. I have always heard the name but had never seen any movie about him. I also told my husband tonight that the young people need to know about this man and began asking him questions about Audie. He told me to check his life story out on google. This is reason I am now commenting. What a moral, family loving, dedicated young man he was. I agree about bringing his memory alive again for our youth of America. Joan A. Suess

One of Audie Murphy's childhood friends, Monroe Hackney, was my father-n-law and I have heard many stories from him about Audie.

A FEW YEARS AGO I HAD THE HONOR AND PRIVILEGE TO VISIT ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY. THERE, LIKE MOST PERSONS I PAID MY RESPECTS TO PRESIDENT KENNEDY, ROBERT KENNEDY AND AUDEY L. MURPHY. AS WE ALL KNOW, PRESIDENT KENNEDY HAS AN ETERNAL FLAME AND THE AREA IS LARGE IN NATURE. ROBERT KENNEDY'S IS JUST A SIMPLE WHITE CROSS, JUST A FEW STEPS AWAY. BEHIND THE TUMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER AND AMPHATHERATRE, ACROSS THE STREET I LOCATED MAJOR MURPHY'S MARKER. I WAS TAKEN ABACK BY THE SIMPLICITY OF THE SURROUNDINGS FOR SUCH A GREAT HERO, BUT THEN I RECALLED THAT THESE WERE HIS WISHES. I'M IN MY 64TH YEAR AND COUNT MY LIFE LONG HERO'S ON ONE HAND, MAJOR MURPHY IS #1 ON THAT LIST. MAY HE REST IN PEACE, HE MOST CERTAINLY DESERVES THIS REST. AFFECTIONATELY AND HUMBLY YOURS, H. ALVAREZ...U.S. ARMY 1968-1970.

Monroe Hackney was my grandfather and he made sure that as my sisters and myself grew up that we knew who he was and his story. My grandfather thought highly of him and spoke of him often.
