I have enjoyed all of Audie Murphy's movies and have seen several documentaries depicting his life as a war hero.

Several years ago, as far back as 2000, I visited Arlington National Cemetary. I made a conscious effort to locate and find his grave site.

I brings me hope that there are still people trying to keep the memories of the past alive so that future generations can come to know great men like Audie Murphy. I appreciate all that you people do along with men like my father who still remember the past and its heroes like Audie and my personal favorite Alvin York. Thank you again.

Helping a memory to live on! My Grandfather served in the Navy during WWII and spoke of his experiences and losing his younger brother, my Great Uncle who is buried in Holland. Granddad passed at the age of 90 and was very proud of his military service. It is our responsibility to make sure our youth know and don't forget the sacrifices made.

I Hear, I See, I Wonder
© r.meuser 12/30/06

As I stand before the military graves
of our fallen heroes:

I can hear,
The bugler’s tribute
echo across a field
of white stone markers
aligned in a straight lined formation.
Seven riflemen fire in respect
of the deceased.

I can see,
The flag for which they fought
folded and presented to a loved one.
No greater gift
can a man give to his nation
but his life for freedom’s cause.

I wonder,
How many more times
must our flag drape a coffin –
rifles fire in honor –
and taps mournfully play?

Other than my father, Audie Murphy has been and will continue to be my greatest hero of World War II.
