As a young boy I watched the film "To Hell And Back" at my grandmothers house. She explained that it was a true story and that the man portraying Audie Murphy was in fact Audie Murphy. She told me what a great hero he was. From then on Audie Murphy embodied to me everything that a man should be! I only wish that I could have met him. Today our country and our world would be far better off if there were more men like him. I will soon be 60 years old and he is still among the most respected and admired individuals that I have had the privilege of looking up to!!

As a young boy I remember my father telling us about Audie Murphy. My father was a pilot in WWII and he had nothing but praise for Audie. He told us about Audie's heroic acts and the numerous medals he received. It was because of my dad that we went to our local cinema at the time to see "To Hell and Back". What a story and what a great hero.

Thank you for including the picture of me with Audie Murphy (Military, photo #51). I must submit a few corrections, however. This picture was taken after the "Smallfry Muster" which was held just prior to the 36th Infantry Division's "Dress Parade" . Both were part of the "middle weekend" activities, during the 36th Infantry Division's two week summer camp, at North Fort Hood. My father served with the 36th before WWII, transfered into the Army Air Corps for the duration the war. He spent 22 months in a German POW camp and, upon his recovery, rejoind the Texas National Guard, 36th Infantry Division in 1946, and remained an active member of the 36th untill his death in 1967. He took this picture and I am sure he would not mind your using it.

Mr. Murphy has always been a hero to me and was an influence that prompted me to join the US Navy in 1967. God help us all if he is allowed to be forgotten.
