Now at age 85, I recall first hearing about Audie Murphy in grade school during WW2. When we boys played "war" in the neighborhood, one of us would always want to be Audie Murphy. We all had BB Guns and were permitted to take them to school to show off. One time in the 4th grade we were given an assignment to form small groups and come up with a "play" to perform for the class. My group of 3 or 4 boy friends of mine performed a re-inactment of a gun battle in France. We brought our BB guns, our dads pistols, and our cap guns to use in the play. Again, we made a point of calling one of us Audie Murphy so all the classmates would clap. Many decades later, while serving in the U S Army, I was fortunate to be assigned to an Engineering group located near Mineral Wells,Texas, the Camp where Audie Murphy took his basic training. Of course there were many postings about him around the camp. I was so proud to even be there and walk where he had walked. I felt blessed. Chuck Winters, Leawood, Kansas
