I grew up watching Audie Murphy movies and knew some tid bits of information but not the actual number of medals or what they were called. I do remember hearing and seeing his picture in a news paper of his death but little else was said of him at tha time. To the country he was a great hero, but to me he was a great movie star that I always looked up too. Added: February 18, 2012

I saw "To Hell and Back" recently, and I must say that he was a "real American war hero" for his exploits in WW II. Oh yes, a "Whispering Smith" TV series episode "The Interpreter" was found last October at The Library of Congress, so you can watch it at TMG's website or You Tube.
