I remember loving to watch the westerns with Audie Murphy as a small child and I also remember my father telling me way back then that he was the most decorated soldier of the war. I have always admired him as an actor then later when the reality of what it meant to be a war hero hit me, with deep respect. I have told my children about him, whether or not they remember I don't know but I have also begun to tell my grand daughter about him too but at 3 she is still far too little to take it all on board now but as she grows whenever she hears she will remember too, I hope. Audie Murphy served in many of the same places my grandfather did during WWII, and the last time i visited my grandfather's grave at Arlington, i literally stumbled across Audie Murphy. very humbling moment. i especially respected that his stone was a simple one. i think that's the way he would have wanted it. i will make sure that my children know the story of this American hero, and the men he fought with. thank you for keeping his memory alive. When I was a child we lived in North Hollywood California, Mr. Murphy lived in the area at the time and my oldest Brother Jimmy was his paperboy. It was not unusual for Mr. Murphy to come out and collect his paper in person and chat with my 12 year old brother, he gave him an autographed picture of a painted portrait of himself in his Army uniform with all of his medals; at christmas he gave him a basket of candies and fruit. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but he left a deep impression on my brother that he talks about to this day some 50 years later.
