Watched To Hell and Back this morning. I have watched it many times as well as other movies Audie Murphy made. The tune in the movie has always stuck with me.

I remember Audie Murphy when I was a kid. I did a short story on him in High School. Funny I had a major crush on him. I thought he was very handsome. I was just 14 when he was killed. I was heart broken. He was a friend of the Mayor here. Mayor Don Hart. I thought Audie was a fine man.

I am so happy to find this website. Mr. Murphy is one of my heroes. My son and I watched all his movies together while I told him about my heroe all during his years of growing up and now Mr. Murphy is one of my son's heroes, also.

I have read about Mr. Murphy's wife and her passing. I have been trying to find out anything I can about his sons and their lives. I have not been able to locate much info however.

I was trying to encourage, some of the shorter and thinner boys in my son's JROTC Armed Drill Team, because they were on the relief B team instead of the Alpha team. I told them about Audy Murphy. Murphy was a man small in stature, and a Native Texan. I wanted them to know that Anyone can be a hero!

In the early 1960's the White Theater in Fresno was a dime cinema that showed two features; some second run movie and "To Hell and Back". I went there almost every week! When I turned 16 I got a job on the backside at Hollywood Park where my uncle, CMH earner Eldon West introduced me to Audie, who often played quarterback for our pick up football games and not only supplied hamburgers hot off the grill as snacks but was also known to share his whiskey with us from time to time. When I returned from combat duty in Vietnam, Audie stopped by a box at the races to inquire after me to my post commandant. That General was ecstatic, especially since he was placed next to Omar Bradley, who also asked about me. From that time on I was given a 3-day pass every weekend! Knowing this great man, even so briefly, helped to mold my character and that of subsequent generations.

I am proud to say that my Dad served with the likes of Audie Murphy. They were most definitely part of the greatest generation.
