As a kid growing up on the southside of Glasgow I was well aware of Audie Murphy through his many movies particularly To Hell and Back. He always struck me as an unassuming man unfazed by his celebrity. I am now nearly 68 yoa.
Unlike a lot of American celebrities who did not do war service he was a hero just like the equally brave Jimmy Stewart who flew about 30 bombing missions over Germany in WW2. There is not enough said about these guys who were larger in life than any screen character they may have portrayed. God bless Audie, Jimmy and those others (I think the late Dale Robertson was another war hero) who risked their lives for freedom rather than accepting the mighty dollar for a forgettable film role.Those of us old enough to remember dont forget easily.
