Reading about Audie Murphy, reminds me of my father, David John Lewis. He was a major in the Royal Welsh Regiment. HE WAS IN NORTH AFRICA AND LATER IN ITALY, WHERE HE MET AND MARRIED MY MOTHER, AT THE END OF WW2. hE WAS AWARDED THE SILVER STAR.
wHEN EVER A FILM CAME ON THE T.V. WITH AUDIE MURPHY, HE WOULD CALL ME FROM WHERE EVER I WAS AND TELL ME , DO YOU KNOW WHO HE IS, HE;S AUDIE MURPHY, HE WAS A GREAT SOLDIER IN THE WAR, AND HE TALKED ABOUT HIS BRAVERY AND MEDALS. MY FATHER NEVER SEEMED TO GROW TIRED OF SUMMONING ME FOR EVER FILM AND REPEATING THE SAME STORY, AS HE DID TO MY FOUR BROTHERS, IF THEY WERE IN THE HOUSE AND TO MY MOTHER. HIS ADMIRATION, RESPECT AND AWE OF HIS WAR RECORD WAS REKINDLED EVERY TIME HE SAW HIM ON SCREEN, SO AUDIE MURPHY IS PART OF MY LIFE AS HE WAS OF SO MANY SOLDIERS AND FAMILIES IN THE WORLD. i AM NOW SIXTY TWO YEARS OF AGE. MY FATHER DIED IN 2000. SOLDIERS WERE SO DEEPLY AFFECTED BY THE WAR AND THE DEATH OF SO MANY COMRADES. MANY WERE ABLE TO CARRY ON WITH LIFE, BUT AS WITH MY FATHER, WITH RETIREMENT FROM WORK AND TIME TO NOT BE SO BUSY, ONE COULD SEE THE WAR COME BACK TO HAUNT HIM, AND HOW HE FELT FOR ALL THE MEN WHO DID NOT MAKE IT HOME.

My dad(Korean War Era, 101st Airborne)& f-i-l(WWII, 758th Tank Bat)are U.S.Army Vets.

We've sought to keep patriotism alive in our home. We're thankful for our Vets who have served so honorably...we know that Freedom is not free. It comes with a price--sometimes, The Ultimate.

We arrived home @ 9AM CST today from a spring break trip to D. C. Our son was 1of4 from his M.S. who aided in laying the wreath @ the Tomb of the Unknown @ Arlington Cemetery.

While @ Arlington, we had the opportunity to view Audie Murphy's grave. We toured the Amer Hist Museum @ the Smithsonian, where we saw his highly decorated uniform jacket & his photo.

My kids (17yo & 12yo) are absolutely in awe of Washington & all they viewed, toured, & learned. I'm happy to say that my children are proud Americans & treasure the service of those who have served or are currently serving in the U. S. Military.

Thank God Mr. Murphy was a PTSD survivor & bravely spoke out against the denial & ignorance surrounding PTSD. I'm also thankful for his service & for the freedom that we enjoy because of him and so many like him.

Thanks for this site.
gmbh

I am very pleased to have visited this wonderful website dedicated to the life of such a wonderful Soldier, actor, HERO and most importantly human being. I am excited about appearing in front of the SAMC board next month. I will do my best to represent myself as a Senior NCO worthy of being inducted into such a prestigious club. Thank you for never letting us forget about the life of Sergent Audie Murphy.
