In the summer of 1954, I was a newly enlisted private in the Intel & Recon Platoon, 142nd Inf Regt, 36th Div, Texas National Guard. When we attended summer camp at North Fort Hood, Texas, our platoon and the I&R platoon of the 141st Inf Regt trained together several times. The S-2s of each regiment were our instructors, alongside our platoon leaders. Capt Audie Murphy was acting as S-2 of the 141st Inf Regt (although his service record does not reflect that) and was a real inspiration to this young private as well as many others. I subsequently completed 27 years of service in the Army and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. But I never forgot the simple but effective manner of Capt Murphy, one of my lifetime heroes. At the age of ten I watched the Movie To Hell And Back, was so moved that I told myself that I was going to join the Army and be just like Audie.. I join at age eighteen and stayed twenty three years. I ventured to the Audie Murphy Museum in Greenville, Tx and when they opened the Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio, Tx., I visited as well. Courage is the word in use to describe Audie Murphy and tell as many young men about him that will take time to listen. Courage. This true American hero should never be forgotten. In an age where sports figures are deemed "heroes", we need to understand the true meaning of tht word. This man was simply amazing, his bravery and patriotism should be held up as a model for all Americans. God bless him and rest his soul.
