I have watched his movies and knew that he was a highly decorated war hero in WWII, but did not know all of the details of his courageous actions in WWII until I started reading more and more about him. It was no surprise that he suffered from PTSD as my father also suffered from it as he saw action in the Pacific. Drafted out of college at Kansas State while studying to be a large animal vet, he attend OCS and rose to the level of Captain in the Army Corp of Engineers. While serving in the Pacific, he developed underwater welding, but because of the law in the Patent area, he could not claim a Patent on it. He did receive a Silver Star. I will continue to study more about Audie Murphy as his heroics were so tremendous that his memory should be held sacred by all Americans and last forever. All of the men and women who served in the military during WWII should remain in memory of all Americans. Added: March 1, 2012

I'm glad to have found this site. It's wonderful to find something that can tell me more about someone as decorated as Mr. Murphy. I've watched many, if not all, of his western movies and found that he was one fantastic actor. It's too bad that he passed in such a tragic way. I hope to find out more about his career and life. I had the pleasure of meeting Audie and his wife in 1970, when he managed my cousins boxxing career. I received 3 pairs of shoes from Audie which I wish I had held on to...I never thought that he was close to the end of his life here on earth... I don't know much about Audie as a soldier, other than what I have read, but I do know that he was a great person in general...I am glad that I had the opportunity to get to meet him, and sit with him at boxing matches, and dinners.

Audie Murphy were one of the most, if not the most, accomplished and courageous combat soldiers in the history of warfare. We are forever greatfull to him for helping us to defeat the nazis. Added: February 28, 2012

My Canadian born mother (met my US father flying with the RAF Ferry Command during WWII in Montreal) who became a US citizen much later took my brother and I to see To Hell and Back when we were little. She came across the border so that we would be born on American soil in spite of the fact that American citizenship was ours regardless and she instilled a value of the gift of America for which I will be eternally grateful to her. This movie has stayed with me as a story of those who paid the price of our freedoom. It is a sad truth that that perspective is not with many of those who would give away the gift of America in return for a fantasy which will evaporate.

I have read "To Hell and Back" several times; Each time being amazed at Mr. Murphy's courage and fighting ability. I really enjoy this site and especially the photos of the young Murphy family. Mrs. Murphy was a beautiful and warm soul. So tragic that Audie died so young.
