As a boy growing up in Brooklyn, NY. I was already leaning towards the Army. My parents knew this, especially my father. He and I would watch old WW2 movies together. One night we watched "To Hell and Back". Halfway thru the movie, my dad told me this was not a regular war movie. He had already seen it many years ago. I asked him who was Audie Murphy? In simple words, my father said He was the Most Decorated American Soldier. A few years later, I was in the Army. In 1985 I was sent to Kitzingen, Germany, assigned to the 3rd INF DIV. I am a Tanker. Down the street from my Barracks was Audie Murphy's unit. His BN HQ was covered in laurels and Photographs of Audie Murphy. In 1991 after Service in the First Gulf War, I was again sent to Wurzburg, Germany, and assigned to the 3rd INF DIV. I am proud of my 2 tours with the 3rd ID. I am proud to be called a "Dog Faced Soldier".33 years later now, with more than enough Combat Time under my belt, it's time to retire. I loved Audie Murphy since I first saw one of his movies when I was a little girl. It was not until a little later that I found out he was an American Hero in World War II. I just thought he was the greatest. I was married with a young son when he passed away and was truly saddened. To this day I wish I had been able to meet him.
