I heard of Audie Murphy from the time I went out and shot rabbits when I was 11yrs old. I wished I would have met him and had him to tell me stories. But I know it had to be rough because my great uncle told me when he was wounded he was playing dead and a SS Germany officer shot him in the back 5 times to make sure he was dead but he lived over it!? I was nine years old when I saw the movie "To Hell and Back". I thought it was fiction until I later read that Audie Murphy REALLY did do what it said & showed in the movie. Even though I enlisted in the Marine Corps & went to Vietnam in 1969, and later enlisted into the USNR (Seabees) and retired in 1998, I always admired Audie Murphy. Added: October 30, 2015

An excellent site you Chaps and worthy credit to one of WW2s great soldiers. You don't have to be an American to recognise the valour and spirit of one of the great warriors of the 20th Century. I think its all too easy to overlook the real man, the hero soldier for the actor he became. We need more like ALM - a man far larger in all dimensions than his stature. Added: October 29, 2015

My father Pcf. Richard G. Niehoff served 15th inf. 3rd Div. with Audie Murphy. He was a replacement and joined the 15th inc. 3rd Div at the Anzio landing. His service was through to the end of the WWII ending at Birchesgarden, Austria. He is sill living at 90 years old. Also served in the Korean War in the Navy serving aboard LST 1071.
