A military photo of Audie Murphy
A studio portrait was taken somewhere in France in late 1944. The photo was given to David A. Phillips by the family of Martin Leo Kelley. Mr. Kelley is mentioned throughout Audie Murphy's memoir "To Hell and Back" but was identified in the movie and book as Kerrigan. Martin Kelley and Audie stayed in contact after the war and Kelley appeared on the Ralph Edwards show "This is Your Life" with Audie in 1949. Kelley also rode with Audie in the City of Boston parade for the opening of "To Hell and Back" in 1955. This photo was sent to Martin Kelley by Audie while Kelley was in the hospital recovering from his last wound suffered in December 1944. Martin Kelley died in 1967 at age 53, days before his 54th birthday. Kelley received three Purple Hearts during the war.
