A Myth in Action: The Heroic Life of Audie Murphy, relates the life of a Texas farmboy who enlisted in the Army in 1942. By the end of WWII, 5‘ 6“ and barely twenty, he had been field-commissioned and had won more medals for valor than any soldier in American history. Coming home a legend, he spent the rest of his life portraying heroes in Hollywood films. He died tragically at 45. His story echoes those of mythological heroes described by comparative mythologist, Joseph Campbell (Hero with a Thousand Faces), psychologist Rollo May(The Cry for Myth) and others. Hero’s lives follow an “archetypal” pattern, from Homer’s Perseus through the Arthurian Percival, to Luke Skywalker - and Audie Murphy.

Before he was old enough to vote, Audie Murphy had fought in World War II and become the most-decorated American hero--a position he still holds. Despite a background of poverty and little formal schooling, Audie Murphy became an Army lieutenant, who led his troops on dangerous missions, including his single-handedly holding off a German regiment while he stood atop a burning tank. After the war, when he returned to the United States, he suffered from post-traumatic-stress-syndrome, a condition which affected his family life and his career. Arriving in San Antonio, Texas, on June 8, 1945, Audie immediately became America's sweetheart and soon found himself starring in over 44 films, mostly westerns. Married twice, he had two sons whom he adored. Although he earned big dollars from his films, money was always a problem, causing Audie to look for new ways to increase his income. It was on one of these scouting trips that he lost his life when the plane in which he was riding flew straight into Brushy Mountain on a foggy day. Audie is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. About the Author: Peggy Caravantes is the author of An American in Texas: the Story of Sam Houston and Petticoat Spies: Six Women Spies of the Civil War. She lives in San Antonio, Texas.

Description:

Charles Whiting tells the tale of barefoot Texan share-cropper's son, who could barely read and write, but became not only the US Army's most decorated soldier in its 250 - year history, but also the star of forty Paramount produced movies: most of which are shown on TV screens around the world to this very day. The gentle-eyed, baby-faced hero had won every decoration the United States had to offer before he was eligible to vote and killed 240 enemy soldiers in the process. Luck made him a movie star. Always he tried to improve himself, but time and time again he was relegated to the 'horse operas', where as he wisecracked cynically, "it was the same old movie, only they changed the colour of the horse." But there was a price to pay for his heroism in drugs, nervous tension and Murphy's addiction to violence. Even as a middle-aged movie star, he always slept with a .45 beneath his pillow, plagued by nightmares of the war. Murphy had been an ordinary boy, who had volunteered to go to fight and did so with exceeding bravery in the last 'good war'. He paid highly for that bravery and sense of duty to a country which had given him nothing save "malnutrition", as he used to quip. He was that last American Hero, who did as President Kennedy proclaimed, " Don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." Even before his young life had really commenced, he had become a legend. But in the end 'Tinseltown' and the 'feather merchants' of Hollywood broke him. As Time magazine commented on his death; "Audie Murphy belonged to an earlier, simpler time, one in which bravery was a cardinal and killing was a virtue... We shall not see his like again."

Audie is mentioned on pages 31, 53-56, 69-70, 126-130, 197, 198. The following synopsis describes the book: "Born at sea, baptized in blood, and crowned with glory” is the proud motto of the U.S. Seventh Army, which has served the country from Sicily in 1943 to the Gulf War in 1991, and is on duty still. From its early history of storming ashore in operations Husky and Dragoon, through the fierce fighting in the Rhone Valley and the High Vosges, to its penetration of Germany, the Seventh Army has had a long and victorious history. Many of its exploits, however, took place away from the spotlight in World War II. While the public focused on Normandy and the Ardennes, Seventh Army grappled with the Germans in the southern sector, unheralded by media attention. While formations in the north became household words, the men of the Seventh simply did their job, albeit at a terrible cost. Now, in America’s Forgotten Army, bestselling historian and World War II vet Charles Whiting brings his incomparable gifts to a story that has long deserved to be known. Here is the full tale in all its humanity and drama, from controversial personalities like George S. Patton, the Seventh’s first commander, to a quiet kid from Texas named Audie Murphy, who became the most highly decorated American soldier of the war. Here are the stories of the squabbling generals, the “Can do!” captains, the “green” lieutenants, the stalwart non-coms and the average G.I.’s, who left home and family behind to fight fascism and bring a dictator to heel."

Compiled from excerpts taken from BookFinder.com, the following summary is provided:
"Audie Murphy is the fifth title in the Stars of Texas Series, aimed at fourth graders studying for the Texas history section of the TAKS test. Audie Murphy was the most decorated soldier during World War II. He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for bravery given to any individual who risks their life above and beyond the call of duty.
Audie Murphy's life was shaped by three things: the Great Depression of the 1930s, World War II of the 1940s, and a Hollywood career which began in the early 1950s and continued through the 1960s. The Depression and his family's poverty toughened him. The war was the experience that followed him all his life and brought him fame. Hollywood was never like real life to him. Of the three, war was the definitive experience of his life.
On May 28, 1971, Audie, along with several other men, were passengers on a private plane on their way to investigate a business opportunity. The plane crashed in fog and rain on the side of a mountain near Roanoke, Virginia. All aboard were killed. Audie Murphy was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
Audie Murphy was a true American hero and his life was a rags-to-riches story. But in Audie Murphy, author Judy Alter shows that fame does not always bring happiness."

Description:

This story begins in November 1941 and recounts B Company’s march through French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. From there, it traces the company’s advance over the Vosges Mountains, through the Colmar Pocket and across Germany to Austria. For many of the B Company veterans, the battles left lasting impressions on their memories. They spoke vividly of Casablanca, Licata, Mt. Rotundo and Bloody Anzio, where they held the beachhead for four brutal months. They related with pride the operations in the Colmar Pocket, the smash through the vaunted Siegfried Line and the capture of Salzburg in May 1945, which led to the ultimate surrender of the German Third Reich. B Company was comprised of men from a multitude of backgrounds. They were farmers, grocery clerks, mechanics, high school, and college graduates. They hailed from different geographical regions throughout the United States. Most of them were between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five. They were either drafted, or enlisted on their own. Not all of them wanted to be there, but they accepted it as part of their duty. The men from B Company didn’t see themselves as heroes; they went to war because it was the patriotic thing to do. Deservedly so, the starring role in this story is played by Audie Murphy. However, the major focus of the book is on the spirit of B Company. It is the author’s hope to reveal the true thoughts, words, and souls of these brave men so that the reader will identify with them in a personal way. This is the story of the B Company foot soldiers—a moving and vivid account told primarily by the characters themselves, through their own eyes and their own experiences. This book is the culmination of a three-year study on B Company. In his pursuit to arrive as near as possible to the truth, the author has thoroughly examined both secondary and primary sources, including: war memoirs, letters, journals, diaries, witness statements, and interviews with B Company veterans. He’s also included several illustrations from his extensive collection of maps and photographs, many of which were personally shot on location.

Description:

In the world of Western films, Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Audie Murphy have frequently been overlooked in favor of names like Roy Rogers and John Wayne. Yet these three actors played a crucial role in the changing environment of the post-World War II Western, and, in the process, made many excellent middle-budget films that are still a pleasure to watch. This account of these three Western stars' careers begins in 1946 when Scott and McCrea committed themselves to the Western roles they would play for nearly twenty years. Murphy, who joined them in 1946, would continue his Western career for a few years after his cohorts rode into the film sunset. Arranged chronologically, and balanced among the three actors, the text concludes with Audie Murphy's last Western in 1967. Covering both the personal and professional lives of these three Hollywood cowboys, the book provides both their stories and the story of a Hollywood whose attitude toward the Western was in a time of transition and transformation. The text is complimented by nearly 70 photographs and a filmography for each of the three A former arts and entertainment journalist, Robert Nott has spent the last ten years as a freelance writer and researcher. He lives in Sante Fe, New Mexico.

Audie is mentioned on several pages of this book. A summary follows: "Declaring that no generation of Americans has produced a finer array of combat commanders than that of World War II, a thirty-year U.S. Army veteran examines combat leadership throughout the war at every level of command. Colonel Cole C. Kingseed argues that although Army Chief of Staff George Marshall’s organization and training policies were indispensible, the ultimate victory was the result of spirited leadership and the undaunted courage of those who served, from individual riflemen to the upper echelons of Army command. Rather than presenting a history of battles and campaigns, the author offers here an analysis of leadership in combat over three continents and across two oceans. He looks at how sergeants, lieutenants, captains, and generals direct soldiers in the most intense of all human dramas – and how those soldiers react. The first part of this book focuses on the generals and takes a thematic approach, examining such topics as restoring the fighting spirit and analyzing the unique characteristics required to command special units in combat. The second part examines a special breed of junior leaders – Kingseed calls them warriors – who fought the German and Japanese armies on the front lines and whose contributions merit attention. Like war correspondent Ernie Pyle, Kingseed includes both the big and little to offer a balanced view of what makes a good combat leader."

On the night of December 7th, Winston Churchill went to bed and for the first time in months he got a sound night’s sleep. On that night for the first time he knew that the outcome of the war was no longer in doubt. Now with the Americans fully committed to waging all out war it was just a matter of how long it would take and how much it would cost. Also on that night Admiral Yamamoto of the Japanese Imperial Fleet, and the man who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor, slept fitfully while Churchill slept soundly. He knew what Churchill knew, that a fired up America would out produce Germany and Japan and he knew that his attack on the American naval bases in Hawaii was the flame that would fire up the Americans like never before and “fill them with a terrible resolve.” This is the story of some of the incredible events of that war and the men who lived through them. The men in this book all had two things in common. They all served with distinction and they all had successful film and/or TV acting careers. Some like Clark Gable, James Stewart and Henry Fonda had well established careers before the war. Others like Audie Murphy, Ernest Borgnine, James Arness and Russell Johnson came after the war and found success in Hollywood.

A companion to the successful volumes on the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, Stars in Blue and Stars in the Corps, this book is filled with celebrity profiles of motion picture stars who served in the U.S. Army and air services from World War I through the Vietnam War. Many readers will discover for the first time details of the contributions made by Audie Murphy, Charlton Heston, Jimmy Stewart and many others. Most remarkable is the large number of celebrities who chose to serve their country in a military capacity--especially during World War II--instead of continuing their lives of luxury in Hollywood. With the previous two books, this work completes the picture of the military experience of movie stars in the United States.

A great read on the battles that Audie participated in. Audie is mentioned on pages 132-33, 174, 261, 394-95, 486, and 543, 575. If you are interested in the battle details that affected Audie, you may want this book. The following is a synopsis: "In An Army at Dawn – Winner of the Pulitzer Prize – Rick Atkinson provided a dramatic and authoritative history of the Allied triumph in North Africa. Now, in The Day of Battle, he follows the American and British armies as they invade Sicily in July 1943, attack mainland Italy two months later, and then fight their way, mile by bloody mile, north toward Rome. The Italian campaign’s outcome was never certain; in fact, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and their military advisers bitterly debated whether an invasion of the so-called soft underbelly of Europe was even wise. But once under way, the commitment to liberate Italy from the Nazis never wavered, despite the agonizing price. The battles at Salerno, Anzio, the Rapido River, and Cassino were particularly ferocious and lethal, yet, as the months passed, the Allied forces continued to drive the Germans up the Italian peninsula. Led by Lieutenant General Mark W. Clark, one of the war’s most complex and controversial commanders. American troops became increasingly determined and proficient. With the liberation of Rome in June 1944, ultimate victory in Europe at last began to seem inevitable. Drawing on extensive new material from a wide array of primary sources, written with great drama and flair, this is narrative history of the first rank. In The Day of Battle, Rick Atkinson has once again given us the definitive account of one of history’s most compelling military campaigns."

This chronicle of Audie Murphy’s life as a film actor details each of his films from Beyond Glory (1949) to A Time for Dying (1971). A biography of the actor runs from his birth date (listed as 1924 so he could get into the army a year early, but really 1925) to his three years in the army winning every possible combat medal, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, and from his entry into Hollywood to his final dramatic decline, gambling his fortunes away, becoming involved in violent episodes and dying in a plane crash in 1971.Each of the 49 film reviews gives full credits, including casts, characters, crew, date of release, location, and cost, backgrounds for directors and main players, and comments and anecdotes from interviews with Murphy’s colleagues. Accompanying commentary also describes what was happening in the actor’s life at the time of the filming and includes reminiscences from other actors and filmmakers about the production. The text is richly illustrated with film stills and private photographs.

Charles Whiting's book 'The Long March on Rome: The Forgotten War' focuses on the invasion of Sicily and the Italian Campaign - particularly Anzio and the march to Rome. Whiting gives the reader a very good insight into the lives of the fighting men (from all nationalities that took part) much more than just a historical, chronological report. He includes the disastrous, fatal and covered-up Allied mustard-gas incident in Bari, the rampart outbreak of venereal disease after the capture of Naples, the behaviour of deserters, blackmarketeers and POW escapees, and of course the atrocious and demoralizing conditions and battles faced by the men on the front lines. This book mentions Audie Murphy and quotes him throughout the book . Quotes can be found on pp. 22, 23, 34, 40-41, 86, 104, 135, 137, 147, and 150.

When he was seventeen years old, Audie Murphy falsified his birth records so he could enlist in the Army and help defeat the Nazis. When he was nineteen, he single-handedly turned back the German Army at the Battle of Colmar Pocket by climbing on top of a tank with a machine gun, a moment immortalized in the classic film "To Hell and Back," starring Audie himself. In the first biography covering his entire life--including his severe PTSD and his tragic death at age 45--the unusual story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated hero of WWII, is brought to life for a new generation.
