During basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas, Private Audie Murphy earned an expert qualification badge for proficiency with a fixed bayonet.
Simpson, when writing his biography on Murphy described the young soldier as a "tiger with the bayonet". A letter written by a Texas army recruit named Walter Black, a close friend to Private Murphy during basic training, stated that...
"It was a real experience to watch Murph go through the bayonet course... (He) went at it with so much vim and vigor during the hot Texas summer, that one afternoon he passed out from heat exhaustion."

Simpson further noted that...
"it was later learned that he had taken ... immunization shots just before (he passed out) and was running a temperature well over 100 degrees" (Simpson, page 49).
