On May 28, 1999 IPALCO enterprises presented to the citizens of the United States of America in honor of all who served their country and to the precious few who received this nation's highest award for valor, The Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial.
Located on the north bank of the Central Canal in White River State Park in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, the memorial is a group of 27 curved glass walls, each between 7 and 10 feet tall.
The Memorial also has a touch-screen monitor for visitors to learn more about the Medal of Honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, and each recipient including Audie Murphy.
According to an Associated Press article contributed by Audie Murphy fan, Ms. Sharon Lovell, there are 27 bluish-green glass panels. Etched into the glass walls are the names of all Medal of Honor recipients with their branch of service and the location where their heroic deed occurred. In 1999 the walls represented 15 conflicts, dating back to the Civl War. Over 3,400 names enshrined. (To read the Associated Press article, click here.) Since the grand opening of the memorial more names and conflicts have been added to reflect new recipients of America's highest award for valor earned during recent conflicts.
