Summary: Gary Brannon (Audie Murphy) and his father Sam (Walter Brennan) run a freight business in Crown City, Colorado whose primary industry is mining. Unfortunately, the ore has played out and the only place where gold can be found is in San Juan Mountains which is in Ute Indian land and is off limits and protected by a treaty. Gary Brannon is an honest man but hates the Indians. Gary decides to join a group of citizens who want to negotiate mining concessions. In the meantime, Frank Walker, one of the group organizers, is secretly planning to start an Indian war to nullify the treaty giving him access to the gold ore. Gary, despite his hatred for the Indians, and his wise father do everything they can think of to keep the peace. Unfortunately, Walker seems to always be a step ahead of them. Gary's father is kidnapped and Gary is blackmailed into stealing a safe from the stagecoach to make it look like the Indians did it. Gary is accused by local authorities for the robbery and is sentenced to hang. But Sam, along with his captors, rescues Gary. Gary in turn kills the real murderers and assures the Indian Chief that peace will be preserved.
