Summary: Jed Sayre (Audie Murphy) is a junior army officer just prior to the beginning of the Civil War. Jed is sympathetic to the plight of the local Navajo Indians. He has also become good friends with the Navajo chief, Menguito. Jed is under the command of a new commander from the South, Captain Lee Whitlock. He has also been tasked by southern agitators to stir up trouble with the local Navajo Indians. Captain Whitlock is also convinced that the Indians are responsible for the death of a prospector. Whitlock also sends Jed and the troops out on a wild goose chase to get them out of the way so the Confederates can gain control of nearby territories. Jed catches wind of the plot and attempts to prevent further bloodshed. Jed also knows that white men have tried to make it look like the Indians killed the prospector and Sayre, who is very protective of the Indians, sets out to prove they are innocent.
