My father, Richard G. Niehoff, joined Third Div. Fifteen Regiment prior to invasion at Anzio. I have determined he was in 1st Battalion because his metal, Presidential Unit Citation, had oak leaf cluster, like Audie Murphy. He continued with unit until raising US flag over Wolf Lair in Birchasgaden, Austria, at end of WWII.

My mom, Wanda Williams Baker was the daughter of Eula Killian Williams. Eula was sister to Audie's mother. The picture that is always displayed in bibliographies and documentaries has my mother with her hands on a young Audie's shoulders. Her sister Aileen Williams, brothers Chester and J.D. Williams are also in the picture. A few of Audie's siblings, including the girl on the right of my mother (my mother always called her June), was a close friend as well as a cousin. Mama would spend the night with them at times. She remembered often going home crying, as they had no food to eat for breakfast, which my mom said was common. My grandmother helped as she could, but during those depression years my grandpa had to work hard to support his own large family as a migrant farmer or whatever work he could get. My mom took her youngest son, Audie Leon Baker, to see Audie Murphy at a jewelry store opening in Dallas when our Audie was 12 or so. He still has the autographed picture of his hero. Audie Murphy said he remembered Mama- his first cousin.

I have to say, I've seen many of his movies, which are great, and I never knew was this decorated. He was a true American patriot. He served our country well, and then went on to be an icon in film. Truly amazing man.
